Airport personnel refuse to let autistic boy board plane

by Kristina Chew, PhD on October 4th, 2006

Security staff at Bangalore Airport in India recently tried to stop an autistic child from boarding a plane and claimed that he was a “threat to other passengers,” as reported in today’s CNN-IBN. Ahed, who is autistic, is the son of Tamil film actor Prithvi Raj. A security officer informed Prithvi Raj that Ahed could not board the plane “‘because he’s mentally ill.’” CNN-IBN reported this exchange between Prithvi Raj and security personnel:

“When my wife asked them they said, ‘Aapka beta flight mein jayega aur baki passenger ko danger karega’ (your son will be a danger to other passengers on the flight). Please, I understand we don’t permit a toothpaste on a flight, but for God’s sake, don’t treat an 11-year-old like a terrorist.”

Prithvi Raj and his wife Bina noted that their son has had to endure this kind of treatment at other airports before. After over a half-hour of arguing, the family was able to board the airplane.

Talk about flying the unfriendly skies.
