All schools should be “autism-friendly”

by Kristina Chew, PhD on June 21st, 2006

The National Autistic Society (NAS) has published a report to accompany its Make School Make Sense Campaign. The campaign is meant to (as reported in today’s Disability Now) close the gap “between what families of children with autism want and what they actually get”.

Among the report’s findings are that 40 percent of autistic children are bulled at school.

The NAS is calling for all schools to be “autism-friendly”—-given that 40-percent figure and too many recent reports of violence against autistic children, I would say, let’s get started on goal right now.

It just makes sense.

In our former school, we used Autism Awareness Month to educate the students about autsim. However, I think it’s too late in the year since we get out in May. I think we should do something in October after we have settled in and before the holidays start.

I like the idea of providing “autism education” earlier in the year than April—-by which time, the school year is almost over. I will keep your suggestion very much in mind.
