In Sickness and In Health

I wasn’t feeling well yesterday (better today). I put together a very perfunctory dinner for Charlie—-vegetables, shrimp, and some rice—and sat beside him while he ate. Once done, he put all the dishes into the sink and then stood with one elbow bent, looking towards me.
I surmised (correctly, as it turned out) that he wanted […]

Something Corny About Those Burgers

As if I needed another reason for not taking Charlie to McDonald’s: The November 12th Scientific American gives the not-so-skinny on what’s inside the beef that the likes of the Golden Arches, Burger King, and Wendy use to make their burgers:
Corn.
Further:
If you thought you were eating mostly grass-fed beef when you bit into a Big […]

Say It Ain’t So, Cookie (Veggie?!) Monster!

So I have learned some truly upsetting news, courtesy of my students.
Cookie Monster now eats vegetables.
What! I said when my students told me. Oh yeah, more than a few said in the most blasé way possible. That’s been going on for awhile. People were all worried that, you know, eating cookies makes you obese and […]

Philadelphia Story on the Day of the Dead

Sunday we drove to Philadelphia to see a good friend. He was driving into the city from one direction and we from Jersey, and we agreed to meet in South Philly. We drove past what I noted was a Vietnamese restaurant and then lines of police cars and small groups of policemen, and lots of […]

PETA Takes Its Billboard on the Road

Remember the Got Autism?” that PETA put up in downtown Newark, New Jersey? The billboard that was subsequently taken down by the ad agency hosting it?
Well, it’s traveled West, to St. Louis, Missouri. From a PETA press release today:
In light of two scientific studies that link milk consumption to autism in children, PETA will […]

Yes, It Is Possible To Get Tired of French Fries

The “special diet” = the gluten-free casein-free diet — has been touted as an alternative treatment for autism for as long as Charlie’s been diagnosed with autism. I still have a rather battered copy of Lisa Lewis’ Special Diets for Special Kids on top of the refrigerator. Ever since we put Charlie on the diet […]

Saturday’s Appointed Rounds

Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds—–that’s the unofficial creed of the US Postal Service, courtesy of the ancient Greek historian Herodotus. I was thinking of it today while Charlie, with the wind picking up and a few drops of moisture […]

Educated Guesses

After being so very tired on Tuesday, Charlie got himself out of bed on Wednesday morning, got dressed and zoomed out the door sans sweatshirt and bookbag before either Jim or I could shove on our shoes. After a tough couple of days at school, Wednesday was very good.
Jim had suggested that keeping Charlie in […]

How Is That Garden Growing?

One of these days I mean to plant some seeds—from a sunflower, a zucchini, a Chinese melon—with Charlie and follow the routines of watering and watching the skies and sun and looking for growth.
In Lake Elsinore, North Carolina, a vegetable garden is growing on the grounds of Canyon Lake Middle School. Adina Ross, who teaches […]

Good Bye To That Billboard

The PETA “Got Autism? billboard has been taken down by the advertising company that was hosting it. PETA’s blog nonetheless noted that the billboard garnered tons of feedback,” with “support from parents of autistic children who have seen noticeable improvements after removing dairy from their child’s diet” specifically noted but not more, ahem, “sour” responses.
