Chasing Storms (Real Ones)

by Kristina Chew, PhD on January 17th, 2008

Texas-based Tempest Tours is offering a “special tour for guests with autism. Tempest Tours’ president and founder Martin Lisius has a 9-year-old daughter, Maddy, who has autism. Says Lisius:

“We created this expedition after receiving contacts from parents of children with autism who were curious about our tours…….Maddy is beautiful and bright. She and all ASD kids deserve the same exposure to new experiences that other children receive. Maddy loves to learn how things work. Storm chasing is a complex and rewarding process that will challenge any child’s mind and ignite imagination.”

My own son often shows a lot of anxiety before a storm starts, as if he can sense the changes in the sky and the air pressure; when the actual storm—-rain and wind—come, it’s often as if clouds are lift from his mind and mood. Not sure Tornado Alley is the place for us to spend a 6-day-tour……….

My son loves to see lightnings and he laughs at the feel of strong winds. But I would keep him away of really dangerous storms!

Charlie never minds getting completely soaked and nothing better than a good mud puddle afterwards.

I think the link is input incorrectly? Should be http://tempesttours.com/ .

TH and Will would LOVE this. I wish Maddy’s Tour were here in TX, because we could easily do that. I’m seriously considering doing it anyway. Who am I to say no to Colorado?

    What a sky!
(I dunno though…having been in some proximity to a twister, I think I’ll stick to watching it on TV.)

Kristina, do you think that it’s all anxiety or is there any chance that Charlie gets headaches? My girls and I get whoppers from barometric changes. (Consider this a most casual question–I don’t want to sound like one of those folks who prescribe online).

Amigo loves The Weather Channel and is thrilled when a storm is on the way. I wonder if they’re equipped to take blind kids on these tours? I’ll check on it.

@Regan, I do think it is something about the barometric pressure. I’ve suspected headaches, and stomachaches too and he is noticeably much relieved (his face changes) when the rain comes down.

If anyone goes, you must provide an account…..
