Chelation Practitioner Faces Charges from CA Medical Board

by Kristina Chew, PhD on December 14th, 2006

A holistic medical doctor, Dr. Alan Schwartz, who is a “chelation practitioner” is facing charges of professional medical conduct from the Medical Board of California. Schwartz is accused of violating a 10-year probationary order: In 1999, the medical board found that he had engaged in “inappropriate sexual conduct” with a patient, as reported in today’s The Acorn. Schwartz, who is supposed to have a third party present while examining male patients who are minors, has admitted to seeing 27 minor male patients without the third party present in 2002-2003.

In addition, Schwartz is accused of “negligent acts in the care and treatment” of four patients aged 3-14: Namely, for making diagnoses of autism and other neurological disorders without having the proper qualifications:

The complaint alleges Schwartz made unsubstantiated diagnoses of autism, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, and other medical conditions without formal physical or neurological examinations.

“In its brevity and lack of detail, this documentation of the justification of the course of treatment . . . is a departure from the standard of care,” the complaint said.

Schwartz is the Medical Director of the Holistic Resource Center in Agoura, California. According to his biography, he is Board Certified in Pediatrics and Board Eligible in Ambulatory Medicine, “has considerable experience in the areas of nutrition, herbal medicine, allergy testing, hormonal regulation, weight loss, chelation, alternative cancer therapies, autism and anti-aging medicine” and is “currently completing several books concerning natural therapies for women’s health issues, prostate problems, cancer, autism and antioxidants.”

The complaint filed against Schwartz can be read at Casewatch.org.
