Employing People with Autism

by Adelle Tilton on November 16th, 2005

One of the biggest challenges people with autism face is getting a job. Many jobs are not appropriate and others, although suitable, arent filled with an autistic person simply due to the inability of the employer to understand the needs of an employee with autism.

The Autism Society of America Foundation through the Institute of Disability, is working to change that. With the awareness that the children with autism in our society are rapidly growing into adults, job issues are becoming a primary issue. The project will work with employers teaching them to train employees with autism, set reasonable goals and provide appropriate accommodations.

These efforts, made by various autism organizations and foundations, are changing what happens to adults with autism. Rather than sitting in an institution all day, adults with autism are joining the workforce and finding fulfillment that decades ago would have been beyond their reach.
