Man With Aspergers Murders Two and Commits Suicide
A tragic story came out of Orange County, California this month. A 19 year-old with Asperger’s Syndrome killed two people before turning the gun on himself. The question is how much of this was Asperger’’s and how much of it was the Internet?
It would be hard to blame this exclusively on either the Internet or on Asperger’s. The problem is most likely much deeper. Society is not prepared to meet the needs of a population that has difficulty with social interaction. Schools are not set up to teach students with Asperger’s social interaction skills and families are not instructed in the social issues of a child and how to prepare them for ordinary human interaction.
The results are usually unremarkable. Young adults with Asperger’s are loners and are considered “odd” by their classmates and co-workers. But occasionally, tragedy results when a person with Asperger’s reaches out to the world in a desperate plea for friendship and companions. I recently covered this story for About.com, Inc.
