More Noise About Noise

by Kristina Chew, PhD on August 23rd, 2006

17-year-old Eric Hayes of Ossory Park in Ireland is severely autistic and especially sensitive to noise and sounds—-and is so affected by the noise from a construction site that he has put his head through a window, as reported in today’s Kilkenny Today.

On Monday, members of Irish Action Autism from Dublin, Wexford, and Waterford and family, relatives, and friends of Eric Hayes protested at the construction site, which is run by MacDonagh Junction Developments Ltd. In regard to moving Eric into a new house, his mother Teresa Hayes, said:

“We couldn’t just land Eric in a new house. It would have to be a transition process. But, we were willing to do it for Eric. We need to be near the hospital in case of seizures or accidents. We can’t take off into the countryside miles away.”

John Joe Hayes, Eric’s father, is no longer going to work during the day in order to take his son away from his home and the noise; the Hayes say that they have video-taped evidence to prove that the MacDonagh company has been working outside hours.
