Music and the Mind
Sound and Mind is a website on music cognition courtesy of Amsteg.org, which is an online community for young composers and music theorists. Sound and Mind provides links to websits and blogs about music and cognitive science, thoughtful commentary on these, and a podcast on topics of relevance to cognitive musicologists.
I’ve just begun to explore the posts about the brain and music on Sound and Mind—this is a topic I am very interested in, and not only because of my son Charlie’s taking piano lessons, and his fondness for playing. Charlie has always been able to carry a tune—one listen and he’ll be humming “Strawberry Fields Forever’.” More than visual aids such as pictures and flashcards with words, hearing the sounds of music, and of words, has helped him to talk. Music is a language—is language—in our house.

Kristina,
I use musical instruments, meditation tapes, toning, sound enhancers,bull-roarers, wind wands and fetal monitors to present different ways to listen. I bet Charlie would love it if you showed him how to make a crystal wine glass sing by rubbing his finger on the rim.
I highly recommend a book “Humming Your Way to Happiness-An introduction to Tuva and Overtone singing from around the world” by Peter Galgut
