New Bike!

by Kristina Chew, PhD on January 6th, 2008

We picked up Charlie’s Christmas present—-a new bike—this afternoon. Charlie made sure to put his helmet in the car and took it out with him, warbling and laughing as he ran into the store and beheld a shiney red and white mens-size Trek mountain bike. I held his old helmet while Jim helped him try on a new one. A man looking over a shelf of protein powders kind of looked our way and Jim and I sort of smiled and tried to remember who he was. Charlie got onto his new bike—it’s much taller than his old yellow one—and started pedaling out the back door, Jim following fast.

I went to the counter to pay for the new helmet and found myself next to the kind of familiar man who, I realized, was Charlie’s dentist. “Is that his first new bike?” he asked after we exchanged pleasantries. “He’s had a few new ones—keeps growing,” I said.

The dentist was buying a big can of protein powder. “I remember when I got a new bike for Christmas,” he said. “But I had to wait till it was spring to ride it—but it’s nice weather today.”

And just right for Charlie’s inaugural bike ride of 2008.

Jim told me he was a little hesitant riding it — his feet don’t quite touch the ground when he is on it. He was excited to get it!

Congrats! What a great gift. Maizie has a Trek bike with training wheels. She loves it. Do you all ride bikes together?

It’s been Jim and Charlie but since I now have a slightly beat-up, but still shiney yellow bike—Charlie’s had a few falls on it—-I think I will be trying to keep up with them!

Gosh, he’s tall. I’ve mentioned it before, but TH canNOT ride a bike. I’m not sure when he’ll be able to coordinate all the messages required for that.

Charlie looks great with his new bike. I can imagine the fun he had riding it around, and the fun he’s going to have with it further.

    Hey Kristina!

Hubby bought me a Trek Bike for Christmas.
It’s great.. Still gettin’ used to the gears though.
When I was a kid I just had a bike with a brake..
I am most certainly sure that Charlie is a more confident and knowledgeable bike rider than myself.
I just gotta find the time to ride it more.
Do love the feeling of the fresh air on my face as I ride though!( usually 6.ooam. )
