New diagnostic tests for autism licensed by Pediatric Bioscience

by Kristina Chew, PhD on July 28th, 2006

The Sacramento-based company Pediatric Bioscience LLC has licensed three technologies discovered by the M.I.N.D. Institute of the University of California at Davis, as reported in today’s Daily Democrat Two of the technologies are:

  • “A prenatal assessment of increased risk of delivering a child with autism by detecting certain auto-antibodies in the blood of the prospective mothers”
  • “A method for detecting autism biochemically, rather than by observed behavior, allowing for much earlier identification of children with autism”

According to its website, Pediatric Bioscience LLC “is focused on bringing to market diagnostics and therapeutics to improve the lives of people with autism and those whose lives they touch.” It was formed by parents, researchers, and business leaders “to understand the causes and develop better treatments and ultimately cures for neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism.”

Looking back, I would have been glad to have known that Charlie was autistic as a baby—-Charlie has always been different in his development, motor skills, and more—but just because he is different does not mean that I would wish him “cured” of having autism.
