Not Stupid

by Kristina Chew, PhD on August 2nd, 2006

I have overheard people and have had them say horrible, hurtful things to me and my son. I hope that those who act like this understand that autistic children can understand them. My son knows when someone is making fun of him; he is not stupid.

So writes Shawna Mattingly of West Valley City, Utah, in a letter in today’s Salt Lake Tribune. Mattingly’s autistic son is 10 years old and the last sentence I quoted above is one that bears repeating: My son Charlie knows when someone is making fun of him.

He is not stupid.
