PETA Takes Its Billboard on the Road
Remember the Got Autism?” that PETA put up in downtown Newark, New Jersey? The billboard that was subsequently taken down by the ad agency hosting it?
Well, it’s traveled West, to St. Louis, Missouri. From a PETA press release today:
In light of two scientific studies that link milk consumption to autism in children, PETA will be displaying a new billboard parodying a ubiquitous milk ad. The ad shows a bowl of milk and cereal next to the tagline “Has Your Child Got Autism? Learn About the Link Between Autism and Dairy Products at PETA.org.”
The bad news is that data from a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that metropolitan St. Louis’ rate of 7.3 cases of autism per 1,000 8-year-old children is one of the highest among the 14 areas studied.
Just for a comparison, PETA said this about why it put the first billboard up in Newark:
*The Newark area had the highest rates of autism occurrence among 14 states studied in one report.
Wonder if PETA has plans to put up billboards in the other 12 states……..

Oh, I get it.
Did they take the original down with the “Got Autism?” because they rethought the matter of capitalizing on public fear and hijacking autism (which is doubtful, because from what I know about PETA, getting attention is the name of the game), or did they get in trouble with California Milk Processors Board legal team?
The change of slogan suggests the latter.
I may be sympathetic to some of the issues that PETA espouses, but not that organization–uhn-uh. Not a dime guys, not a dime.

This truly sucks. That is the last thing I want to be blogging about. I hope people make a stink about this one as well.

PETA wants attention, positive or negative, it is all the same to them. Being spoken about is what is key to them at the moment.
Regan has coined the perfect slogan - “Not a dime guys, not a dime”. Cut off funding and the billboards will disappear.

This is reminding me of Denis Leary who’s been getting plenty of attention for his book because of what he wrote about autism.

Are you kidding me? I can’t believe they’re going with this again. If we make a fuss, they get attention; if we ignore it, they spread misinformation. I’m so disgusted.

Milk causes autism? Wow, I missed that one.
@AndreaS - you’re so right. You’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t. I’d much rather spend my time focusing on enjoying my kids and helping them navigate through life than battling these types of blatant misperceptions.
