Really, Really Loud Noise (2)

by Kristina Chew, PhD on August 21st, 2006

Thanks to the efforts of pilot Terry Harrison, Jimmy and Connie Casper’s autistic son, Jared, no longer has to run inside his house when stunt planes and student pilots roared over East Amwell, NJ. Harrison, a commerical pilot who flew “everything from homemade planes to balloons” went to small airports all over central New Jersey and implored them not to fly over East Amwell, as reported in today’s NJ.com. The Federal Aviation Administration has designated an 8-by-2-mile section over the township as a practice area.

“‘He gave up 30 to 40 of his buddies he’s known for 20 to 30 years in order to save my son,’” said Jimmy Casper, noting how Harrison’s efforts had cost him more than a few personal relationships. Sadly, Harrison died on July 29th when he crashed in an amphibious aircraft that he had built.

Jared Caspar’s sound sensitivity to airplanes—and efforts to limit noise pollution from above—recalls the case of the autistic boy in Cyprus who was awarded 250,000 pounds for “extreme distress” caused by British aerobatic display jets from the Red Arrows.
