Rock Band Member’s Behavior NOT Linked To Drugs

by Adelle Tilton on March 6th, 2006

These days, any behavior at all by a rock band member, is not really considered unusual. Breaking guitars, shouting or screaming insults, and acting bizarre is considered normal. Sometimes it is attributed to drugs. Other times, it is considered part of the “act.”

The Vines, a very popular band in the United States, United Kingdom and Australia, has enjoyed a streak of fame in rock and roll circles. “Singer and songwriter Craig Nicholls is a proper star, out-there and bonkers. He’s a prodigious and ostentatious marijuana smoker who survives on a burger-only diet. He’s occasionally been rude and uncommunicative in interviews and pulled funny faces in photographs. But so what? Nicholls’s wild-eyed guitar-smashing antics have afforded him iconic status among a new generation of young music fans.” (”Guardian Unlimited,” March 5, 2006)

It wasn’t drugs. And it wasn’t part of the act. Turns out Craig Nicholls has Asperger’s Syndrome and the job of rock star was quite a challenge for the young man. This story in the “Guardian Unlimited,” tells an interesting tale of someone with Asperger’s, living life in the fast lane and the fallout of that lifestyle.
