Autism Vox

Roy Richard Grinker on CBS2 Chicago

by Kristina Chew, PhD on April 15th, 2007

Earlier today, anthropologist Roy Richard Grinker spoke on CBS2 Chicago about the so-called “autism epidemic” and the changes in the diagnostic criteria for autism; his research on the prevalence of autism in Korea; the mercury-autism issue; and his recently published book, Unstrange Minds: Remapping the World of Autism. A few quotes from Dr. Grinker:

“It looks like an epidemic, it feels like an epidemic…… the methods that scientists use to count cases have changed over time.”

“For now, we’re starting to see autism as a plural, as autisms.”

Unstrange Minds is really about the scientific literature and about parents’ experiences. The scientific literature does not contain good data that links autism to vaccines or mercury or anything that has ever been contained in vaccines. …… There have been efforts by people to find blame or find a cause but it just hasn’t been borne out by scientific research—I know from my own personal experience that we look for blame, we look for something.”

It was nice to see media coverage that spoke about autism in a more positive and informative light. I really need to get his book.
