Say It Ain’t So, Cookie (Veggie?!) Monster!
So I have learned some truly upsetting news, courtesy of my students.
Cookie Monster now eats vegetables.
What! I said when my students told me. Oh yeah, more than a few said in the most blasé way possible. That’s been going on for awhile. People were all worried that, you know, eating cookies makes you obese and diabetic.
So is he Veggie Monster now? I had to ask, and was informed that occasionally he gets one cookie.
What is the world coming to? Even bake sales are being outlawed in my home town (for all that I talk of New Jersey, I’m an Oakland/Berkeley girl). Good thing we’re not in such a super-duper nutrition conscious clime now, Charlie having developed a deep fondness for brownies, happily shared by his dad. (Me, I’m thanking a friend for gifting me with xocolatl—sort of like molé sauce in bar form.)
But the true tragedy of a Cookie Monster who no longer crunches cookies is that, were Charlie much younger, he and I could no longer bellow out “C is for cookie, and Charlie!, that’s good enough for me, C is for cookie……” (but not, I must state, Kristina). (Just had to note that!) It is the case that, Charlie having been all those years on the gluten-free casein-free diet, the chocolate chip and oatmeal cookies devoured so messily by said monster were off-limits. But believe me, it’s some good fun to be sitting on the floor, swaying and bopping backing forth, and wailing “THAT’S GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME!” at the top of your voice while your little boy laughs and smiles and says “D” because he’s struggling with his articulation and runs around the room and on the couch and tries to say, too, “monster!”. (But it comes out like “mobster”—same difference?).
Believe me, I do like, and eat, my vegetables (Charlie does too), but singing “Veggie, Veggie, Veggie starts with V” just doesn’t have that……cooky ring to it.
And Charlie’s middle name is Vincent, with a V, as in…….yes, veggie. Pass the V-8…………

Cookie monster ate, but how much did he swallow. Kid’s don’t need a gluttonous face cloth with eyes to teach them to love cookies.

Interestingly enough, Eleanor thought cookies were kind of “yuck” for quite a while when she was little–I think most of them were too sweet for her palate. But she thought the old videos of Cookie Monster in cookie rapture were funny and the character was one of the first that she related to–along with Elmo.

As far as I was told at Sesame Place during the Variety Club event a few weeks ago, he is still the Cookie Monster, and he will never be the Veggie Monster.

Well, you’ve heard Cookie Monster also has an eating disorder. He never actually EATS the cookies.

LOL. How do the keyword tags generate the sidebar ads and blog recommendations? From time to time I boggle on what pops up depending on the post.
I’m guessing that the reference to “veggie” was the trigger for the ad “How I lost 36lbs. Fast” or “How I lost 35 lbs. in 3 months with no dieting”, countered by the recommended Peanut butter and honey cookie recipe blogpost triggered by “cookie”.
(I love watching artificial intelligence at work.)
