Sometimes you just have to be abrasive
“Sometimes abrasive mother fights for autistic son’s rights” is the headline of an article in today’s Topeka Capital-Journal.
It’s a little more than ironic that we autism and special education parents have to abandon our own social skills and be “abrasive” and “aggressive” to get our kids what they need. And all the more as we strive every day to teach our kids to do their best in social situations.
Rose’s comment on my post NJ school district starts in-district autism program, but why gives a good perspective from a parent and a teacher about special ed over the past 25 years. One hopes that we can all work as partners with school districts with our kids’ best interests in mind.
It’s them we’re educating, first of all.

The only reason things are changing is because of “uppity” parents.

I always get a chuckle when two of us autism bloggers post on the same topic about the same time. I’m pretty sure you and I have done this before Kristina! It’s actually surprising it doesn’t happen more often considering we’re all dealing with so many similar things.
