Traveling Without Your Child—Still Not So Easy

This summer has seen its share of discussion of the challenges of traveling with special needs children (on airplanes, in particular); more recently, there’s been discussion of traveling with autism assistance dogs, too. The August 12th International Herald Tribune describes the difficulties of caring for a special needs child when you, the parent, have to […]

Delayed Reactions

Yes, third day at the beach was the charm and on the fourth day, we were back in beach business, so to speak. As the afternoon wore on—when the sunlight was not as intense—Charlie stood at the edge of the water and deliberately, unhesitatingly, walked in and started swimming. Almost every day this past […]

Learning to Swim’s More than Necessary

Being at the beach, water safety is not just a concern; it’s an every moment necessity. Charlie did a lot more swimming today (more on that later) and I still remember the relief I felt when, at the age of 6, he learned how to swim. This meant that, while still always keeping an eye […]

Britney Spears Worried About Her Older Son

And now, Britney Spears is worried that her older son, Sean Preston, might be autistic. It’s reported that he “often seems to be off in his own little world” (admittedly, rather vague symptoms of autism)—-it does seem that, if your young child has any developmental delays and “keeps to himself,” dread of autism looms.
Thinking about […]

Britney Spears Worried About Her 2-year-old

Not that this is becoming the autism celebrity blog or anything—–but just read that Britney Spears is worried her 2-year-old son, Jeyden James, has autism. The source is via Spears’ ex-husband, Kevin Federline; according to a “Federline insider,” Jeyden is “very calm and hard to get through to” and that he “does not mix […]

Evan Kamida (July 30, 2000 – July 24, 2008)

Evan Kamida passed away suddenly and unexpectedly this week. I met his mother, Vicki Forman, last weekend and how I wish I, and Jim and Charlie, could have met Evan, too.
Many thoughts and many hugs to his family, and much more.
Contributions can be made to remember Evan to:
The Pediatric Epilepsy Fund at UCLA
Division of Pediatric […]

Endless Tiring Afternoon, With a Dash of Understanding

Hectic crazy stressful crying yowling (suddenly, in the deep end of the pool all while swimming most excellently) tense scared face and hunched up shoulders.
Yesterday was that kind of afternoon for Charlie and me.
It was an everything not in place kind of day with a call from the ESY director as I was walking out […]

Autism Legislation in CT and VA

Today Connecticut Governor M. Jodi Rell signed House Bill 5696, which requires insurance companies to cover physical, speech and occupational therapies for autism, if their policies cover these treatments for other conditions, and also House Bill 5590, which calls for a statewide plan to teach autistic children. In Virginia, parents are seeking to get House […]

Remembering BART, BlogHer, and Some Books

The first thing I have to say about being at BlogHer was that, because I didn’t have to keep looking for a boy at my back (not that I didn’t sometimes turn and scan the room for him; it’s a reflex)—-because I was on my own, I got a chance to look at some things […]

No Ferris Wheel. Mom!

Said Charlie. He and Jim had driven for 3 1/2 hours on the Garden State Parkway to the beach; swam in some mighty cold water (no one else was in); had a delicious seafood dinner; went to the rides. And then, per Charlie’s request, home.
Time for me to go home, too.
