The Difference a Diagnosis Makes 2
“That diagnosis opened a door of support that we didn’t have before.”
So says D.L. Clarke of her now 14-year-old daughter Aubrey, who has Asperger’s Syndrome and whose story is told in Aubrey’s Journey. Clarke is quoted in the February 2nd Albany Democrat-Herald.
I agree: While it is difficult to hear the words “Your child has autism”, knowing that there is a name to explain why one’s child is not talking—why the only toy he plays with is a set of 10 stacking cups—why he keeps pushing the rewind button to watch the same scene of the four Teletubbies falling off their chairs again, and again, and again, and screams in all out terror when you say “let’s watch the rest.”
It’s not easy to get that diagnosis, but it makes a world a of difference: Armed with this new knowledge, a parent can start looking for answers to help a child grow and learn, and can also discover how they are not at all alone.
