The Heart of It All

by Kristina Chew, PhD on December 28th, 2006

He is the heart of our family and the one who keeps things in perspective for all around him.

Says autism mother Amy Gilmore of her 15-year-old autistic son Drew in a letter to the Daily Press (VA) about a visit to Santa with Drew and his four brothers. Drew’s “obsession” of the year has been watches and when he told Santa “‘Drew wants a watch,’” Gilmore noted that “Santa reached over and took off his very own watch (which had a Santa face on it) and gave it to Drew.”

Thanks to Gilmore and to Drew for a post-Christmas reminder about gifts great and small.

    Go Santa!

I think Sam was happiest about my thanking him for his help in picking a present for his brother. (I couldn’t decide between 2 things, he picked one; he pointed, he almost never, ever points in response to my queries.) He hasn’t opened everything (neither have his siblings, though) and doesn’t know about the Tinker Toys. (He thought that Tinker Toys might be a good idea when I pointed them out in the store yesterday, so we should open that soon.)

Oh, and we put a rocking chair in his room, and he was delighted with that. (We want to put up a swing in his doorway; if anyone has a recommendation, I’d be grateful for one!)

Cheers for Santa! This is more than a small favor. This jolly old elf really understood the value of a gift.

The best gifts are so often the least expected!
