The Salving Rituals of Surfing
Surfers Healing was founded by autism parents Israel and Danielle Paskowitz and holds surfing camps for autistic children in California, Mexico, Virginia, New York, and New Jersey. The Paskowitz’s son, Isaiah, is autistic and Izzy had the idea for Surfers Healing one day while surfing with his son on the front of his surfboard and him on the back. Other groups, including the San Diego Autism Society, have been running surfing camps for autistic children, as noted in yesterday’s Union-Tribune (CA).
We have wanted to sign Charlie up for one of Surfers Healing’s surf camps but the dates when they are in New Jersey and New York have coincided with the start of Charlie’s school year and the transition from oceanside back to the land tends to be rather tricky for Charlie to navigate. Charlie more than loves swimming in the ocean and we are hoping to have him take surfing lessons next summer so he can participate even more in, as the Union-Tribune (CA) notes, the “salving rituals of surfing.”
