These Shoes Are Made For Wearing (By Charlie, Not Me)

by Kristina Chew, PhD on October 26th, 2007

While rearranging the plastic bins with Charlie’s socks, I found a box with a new pair of size 5 1/2 shoes (black leather slip-ons, same as his dad’s). The heels are almost worn out on the pair that Charlie has been wearing every day and I placed them to the side and set the new ones out by Charlie’s backpack and gray hooded sweatjacket. On a whim, I slid my right foot into one shoe.

My foot wiggled around: The shoe (Charlie’s shoe) was too big for me.

(But he still has a way to go to catch up to Jim’s.)

    Scary, isn’t it?

Even though I think of Eleanor as my “little girl”, this is a young lady who is almost as tall as I am and has an almost alarming shoe size, which is almost the same as mine at 18. Basketball, anyone?

Like you and Charlie, Kristina, we have a ways to go to meet Dad, who has to special order his shoes.:-).

Having just replaced Brendan’s men’s size 6.5, bought last July, with size 7 sneaks, I’m with you on this! I recently finished knitting his yearly 6 pairs of woolly socks, getting ready for winter, I thought I’d make Charlie a long-overdue new pair as well (since we don’t need new socks yearly!). When I looked-up Charlie’s foot measurements in my knitting log, I realised that Brendan’s feet are now 1/4 inch bigger around than Charlie’s (size 11’s…), & they’re half an inch longer than mine, too. I can only hope we’ll continue to find blue shoes in the larger & larger sizes, as that’s all he’ll wear. :)

I’ve gathered some hand-me-downs from Amigo such as sandals and slippers. His shoes? He wears them out completely. Totally.
