TJ, a True Hero

by Kristina Chew, PhD on December 17th, 2007

7-year-old TJ is a hero: When his mother, Trudy Reed, collapsed last week in Queensland, TJ called emergency personnel and got his two younger sisters out of hot car and into the shade. From ABC News (Australia):

“We’ve been trying to drum it into the kids as soon as they could listen I suppose about what to do and we’ve just moved house so it was even more important for him to get to know his new address,” she said.

“But for him to ring the ambulance and describe what was around him and where to come not knowing the address, it was just unbelievable.”

The officer in charge of Rockhampton ambulance station, Michelle Baxter, says TJ acted in a very mature manner and did a fantastic job. “He was able to call 000, he was able to remember what numbers it was to call and then to be able to speak to the operator at the other end of the phone, tell what was wrong with his mum and then to be able to hand the phone over to somebody else who could help who came on the scene,” she said.

Bravo. Many times over!

He’s headlined a “hero”, but the journo still has to get the suffering rhetoric into the story:

“TJ, who suffers from autism, not only called 000, but also got his two younger sisters out of the hot car and into the shade.”

The time is overdue to end this abusive propaganda, TJ is obviously not suffering (except for being at the receiving end of prejudice).

I’m very glad that happened, and I’m especially glad for TJ. And though I am so conditioned for it at this point, anon_two is right about the whole “suffers from autism” bit. But the story, as a whole, is extremely good.
