Top 10 August Posts
It may have been the dog days of summer, but autism never takes a vacation. Here are the highlights of August: Thanks to everyone for reading Autism Vox—-your comments spur me to think and re-examine my own views, and reaccess.
- 4 autism limericks from the Omnificent English Dictionary In Limerick Form (OEDILF) spark discussion about how we talk about autism, and a few more limericks.
- Mother arrested for keeping autistic son home: What do you do when school is no longer safe for your child—-and the school district thinks otherwise?
- The ND Word: Autism as Difference Not Disease: It’s not a disease, it’s a way of life proclaims the August 7th Guardian.
- Immunizations, Children, and Lots of Questions: I participated in a conversation with health care professionals and bloggers about health and parenting made possible by Revolution Health.
- A New York Times article notes in passing that divorce is a commom side effect of autism and much discussion ensues.
- Who diagnosed your child? And why does it matter?
- Is your child in a public or private school placement? What works, and what does not?
- He looks so smart more than a few people have said about Charlie and intelligence.
- What qualities does the parent of an autistic child need to have: Acceptance? A sense of humor? Persistence? Something else?
- Arthur Miller’s Secret: The writer’s son, Daniel, was institutionalized shortly after his birth in 1962. Is it right, fair, or necessary to reaccess the “great American playwright” and a voice of morality and integrity?
August was full of travels with Charlie, who showed a lot of interest in being around and interacting “in his way” with other kids, and who learned how to surf and took his first surf lessons. Honest, but I never meant to raised an ocean swimmer.
