Two Tragedies: Autistic Boy Dies From 12-story Fall

by Kristina Chew, PhD on May 9th, 2006

Security is from the Latin prefix se meaning “without” and the noun cura, meaning “care, trouble, concern, worry.” Keeping our kids safe and sound–”without trouble or worry”–is a top priority and this makes us autism parents no different from parents of any and all kids.

What to make of the 12-year old Toronto boy who fell 16 stories to his death from the window of his caretaker’s apartment? The caretaker had left the boy alone for “only a moment,” according to the Toronto Sun, ‘A great, big thud’: 12-year-old ‘was rolling his head’ as stranger tried to comfort him after 16-storey fall.

[Kathleen] Holding [who saw the boy fall past her 8th floor apartment] said she was worried that the boy was alone in the apartment because no one came downstairs after he fell.

“No one came. I want to know why the hell no one was with him,” she said.

“I didn’t even know this little boy’s name and it’s breaking my heart.”

The boy’s death is a tragedy.

The other? That he was not taught about the dangers of windows–that there was no one there–even his caretaker–at the moment he needed someone.
