Video Savant
That’s how the New York Times referred to American Idol contestant Jonathan Jayne. Jayne has a “mild form of autism” and was “viciously ridiculed” by Simon Cowell, with much outrage among the autism community ensuing.
But “video savant.” Someone who is skilled at making videos? Or an encyclopedic knowledge of them? Or simply a particular ability to operate the VCR or to find that one video in anyone’s house……..

I saw the youtube video, and it seemed that Simon was actually fairly easy on him. Jayne’s friend (that bushbaby-eyes guy) certainly seemed to suffer from the typical wrath though.

Isn’t cruelty the point of that show? Why should a “video savant” be treated special on a fairly crass entertainment show created to make money?

I’m not a frequent watcher of the show (or of any TV show, for that matter), but that is my impression of it.
