Wanted: Powerful Science Advisor (for the next president)

by Kristina Chew, PhD on May 7th, 2008

An article in the May Scientific American explains why the next president needs a powerful science advisor.

If you consider the political pandering among the presidential candidates about the vaccine-autism myth—-it’s too obvious why.

I don’t know if this reflects the appointee during an administration, but these are the democratic candidates’ advisors now,
“…Obama’s young science advisor and senior vice president of the non-profit One Economy Corporation, Alec Ross; and by Clinton’s advisor, Thomas Kalil, special assistant to the Chancellor for Science and Technology at the University of California at Berkeley…”

I did a search on McCain, and didn’t come up with a hit.

We also need an administration that isn’t beholden to big pharma, the tuna lobby and other special interests. FDA has a credibility problem - justifiably so. Restore the public’s confidence in the FDA, and we may be able to steer the policy in a more productive direction.

I agree with Laura, but I’m not optimistic that will happen regardless of who wins. I honestly believe that the only way we can remain healthy is to take matters into our own hands and keep a healthy immune system and keep our bodies toxin free. At the very least, it will keep us feeling good. At best, it will put the drug companies out of business.
