Year-round school may not be such a bad idea
My son Charlie has been extra-agitated for the past few days in part, I think, because he has one more week of summer school, we will soon be going on vacation, and then he still has two more weeks off before the start of school in September. More and more, I think that year-round school would help Charlie—-as does Arizona mother Carolyn Montello, who says of her fourth-grade autistic son Jacob:
“He tends to regress this time of year. He’s probably the kind of kid that would benefit from all-year schooling, but that’s obviously not practical for everybody.”
Montello has been drawing pictures of the bus for Jacob to help him with the impending start of a new school year—–and you can bet that we’ve been putting together calendars and visual schedules and lining up activities for Charlie for the rest of August.

My son was in an early intervention (birth to three) that ran year round — 6 weeks on, one week off. We loved it. They planned their breaks to coincide with holidays, and families liked that. I could see a schedule like that being very effective for a lot of kids.

That would be the best thing for Charlie, I think—the next month is going to be interesting for us!
